Answer:

Given, percentage of carbon is. 82.7

Atomic weight of carbon is 12

Relative atomic ratio for carbon = (82.7÷12)= 6.89

Again, percentage of hydrogen is 17.3

Atomic weight of hydrogen is 1

Relative atomic ratio for hydrogen = (17.3÷1)= 17.3

Smallest atomic ratio for carbon = (6.89÷6.89)= 1

Smallest atomic ratio for hydrogen = (17.3÷6.89)= 2.5

In order to make the smallest atomic ratio in round figure we can multiply both of them by 2 and can write,

For carbon smallest atomic ratio =1×2 =2

And for hydrogen smallest atomic ratio = 2.5×2 = 5

So, the empirical formula of the compound is C2H5

Let the molecular formula of the compound is (C2H5)n

Here molecular mass = 58

So, (2×12+5×1)n = 58

or, n=(58÷29) = 2

Molecular formula of the compound is (C2H5)2

= C4H10

Therefore, the empirical formula of the compound is C2H5 and the molecular formula of the compound is C4H10
