Answer:
Once upon a time a wise king ruled his kingdom. In order to know the first hand information from people and the condition of law and order, he would disguise himself and go among common people and talk to them.
One night he decided to disguise himself and visit a particular part in the capital that had become notorious for criminal activities. As he was roaming the streets, he saw some thieves. They were planning to commit a burglary at the royal palace. Considering him to be another thief, they invited him to join them in their gang. Their chief said, “Tonight we are going to break into the royal palace. You are lucky, we will steal some precious jewelry of the king and the queen and also give you a large share.” The disguised king immediately agreed to their proposal.
As they climbed the wall of the palace, the king sent a secret message to the head security officer about the plan of the thieves. The officer reached the place where the thieves were hiding. He arrested everyone except the king. The other thieves were shocked to see this. The king said to the thieves, “I am the king; I often disguise myself as a commoner and it has always helped me save many things. Today, I saved my own palace from being burgled.”
Unfortunately, the Chief Ministers and Prime Ministers don’t do such things as a result the commoners continue to live facing many problems. How nice it would be if the elected members in the Government would do the same thing.
Explanation:
The newly crowned king’s habit was to disguise himself as a commoner and walk with his people. It gave him a sense of freedom and understanding far beyond what his ministers and spies gave him. The king strode purposefully through the streets, silently observing what the pulse of the people was. He saw happiness and sorrow, mixing in the night. He also saw, with great sadness, some undesirable elements, festering with discontent.
These were the ones discarded by society, the ones he wanted to understand, the ones he wanted to help. He went over to them, sat with them, listened to their stories, stories of anger and loss and poverty and desperation. He sat with them as they hatched a plan, the plan that would pull them out of the pit. He realized sadly, they were all soldiers, veterans of past wars, now discarded like broken toys.
The army and his court had forgotten them, he realized with a sense of thunderous sadness. He decided to go along with their plan that was doomed to fail. The king proudly thought of the watertight security system and measures that were in place. He knew of every single passageway and every nook and cranny in the palace. He stealthily crept into the palace with them, sadly, knowing full well their plan was destined to fail. He followed them as watched them as they excitedly gestured to the door of the treasury after going through a series of secret tunnels that he once played in as a child.
The king decided to end the charade and called for his guards. He removed his disguise- first the wig, the scraggly beard and the scar and the rags. The thieves stood there, rooted in shock and anger and fear. They felt like they had met their end. The king stared at the subjects he had failed with sorrow. “Today, you men have opened my eyes. You fought for the glory of your country and it abandoned you. Your country failed you, but it will not do so, ever again. Today I announce pensions for those who have served in the army. No faithful servant of the realm should go hungry.”
