A lens produces a magnification of -0.5. Is this a converging or diverging lens? If
the focal length of the lens is 6 cm, draw a ray diagram showing the image formation
in this case.
(ii) A girl was playing with a thin beam of light from a laser torch by directing it
from different directions on a convex lens held vertically. She was surprised to see
that in a particular direction, the beam of light continues to move along the same
direction after passing through the lens. State the reason for her observation. Draw a
ray diagram to support your answer.

Answer:

Part a)

Magnification of the lens is negative so it is real image which is only possible in converging lens

Part b)

When light passes through the optical center then it moves out without any deviation.

Explanation:

Part a)

If the magnification due to lens is given as

M = -0.5

so here we have

\frac{d_i}{d_o} = -0.5

so we have

d_i = -0.5 d_o

so here the lens must be convex lens because this shows the condition of real image and only convex lens can form real images

Part b)

When light ray passes through the optical center of the lens then the light ray has no deviation in its path.

So when girl put the laser light along the optical center of the lens then there is no deviation in light and it passes in a straight line through the lens

This is because the angle of incidence of the light is zero degree when it passes through the optical center and hence it moves out undeviating.
