A line passing through the points (x, -6) and (-3, 14) has a slope of -4. What is the value of x?

so 

by using formula 

\frac{(y-y_1)}{(x-x_1)}=m    where m = slope

so 
\frac{(14+6)}{(-3-x)}=-4 

\frac{20}{(-3-x)}=-4 

5=3+x 

x=2  ANSWER

Slope of any line = subtract the y coordinate and divide it by subtract x coordinate
m =y2-y1  
      x2-x1
-4 =14+6
     -3-x
-4 =20
     -3-x
12 + 4x=20
4x=8
x=2
