A liquid is in equilibrium with its vapour in a sealed container at a fixed temperature. The volume of the container is suddenly increased. What is the initial effect of the change on vapour pressure?

We know that a Vapour pressure is the pressure exerted by the vapour in equilibrium with the liquid at a fixed temperature.

(a) If the quantity of the container is quickly raised, then the vapour pressure would decline originally.


This is because the number of vapour continues the same, but the size increases suddenly.


So, the same amount of vapour is distributed in a larger volume.
