Consider the projectile [ tilted at π/2 ] with directrix --> y = x²
or simply, consider a half-ellipse --> y = x²;
The girl hits the ball, and due to some obstruction, or repression, the reacting force causes the ball to come back to her...
In case the projectile is upward ---> the ball is experiencing gravity

it's just because of gravity !!!

Maybe she kicked it upwards. It came back to her because of gravity. It is totally possible, After all direction is not mentioned in the question.
