Dust of Snow by Robert Frost

Life is full of surprises. It offers us moments of  joy and sorrow from the most unexpected sources.

A little incident or action may have far reaching consequences than one can ever expect. There lies the beauty of life.

Often it is observed that gloominess, discontentment gets the better of us. We feel low and unhappy. Our spirits are dampened and there is no positivity or optimism left in us.

Unable to analyse the cause of this unhappiness we choose to sulk and brood. But all of a sudden a small action or incident changes our mood.

It elevates our spirits. It could be the song of a bird like that in the poem "The Darkling Thrush" by Thomas Hardy or the blooming of a flower like Wordsworth's "Daffodils".

Through the poem 'Dust of Snow '  Robert Frost expresses the same kind of feeling.

He takes two objects which usually symbolise death and  negativity- the crow and the hemlock. The crow is regarded as the harbinger of death whilst Hemlock bears flowers that are poisonous.

But when a small lump of snow that had settled on the hemlock tree falls on the poet's shoulder by a movement of the crow it suddenly brings in him a new leash of life.

His grumpy mood changes into happiness. He suddenly feels light and merry.

This little action  creates a deep impact on him. It etches a life-long memory like the sight of the Daffodils had for Wordsworth.

Life again becomes beautiful for him.
