Answer:

Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. Usually, acceleration means the speed is changing, but not always. When an object moves in a circular path at a constant speed, it is still accelerating, because the direction of its velocity is changing.

Given:-

  • Mass = m = 12,000 kg
  • Initial velocity = u = 10 m/s
  • Time taken = t = 5 s

To find:-

  • Change in momentum
  • Rate of change of momentum

Answer:-

As the body comes to rest, final velocity= v = 0 m/s.

Finding change in momentum:

We know that, momentum = mass * velocity

→ p = mv

And, change in momentum = (final momentum) - (initial momentum)

→ ∆p = mv - mu

→ ∆p = m(v - u)

where,

  • m is mass
  • u is initial velocity
  • v is Final velocity

Putting values given in the question,

→ ∆p = 12000 (0 - 10)

→ ∆p = 12000 * (-10)

∆p = -120000 N s or kg m/s Ans

Finding rate of change of momentum:-

Rate of change of momentum = (change in momentum) / (time taken)

= ∆p/t

where,

  • ∆p is change in momentum
  • t is time taken

Putting the values given in the question,

→ Rate of change of momentum = (-120000)/5

Rate of change of momentum = -24,000 N Ans
