Kargil Vijay Diwas, named after the success of Operation Vijay. On this day, 26 July 1999, India successfully took command of the high outposts which had been lost to Pakistani intruders. The Kargil war was fought for more than 60 days, ended on 26 July and resulted in loss of life on both the sides. The war ended with India regaining control of all the previously held territory, hence re-establishing the status quo ante bellum.Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated on 26 July every year in honour of the Kargil War's Heroes. Kargil Victory Day is celebrated every year on July 26th in India.
This day symbolizes the victory of the Indian Army over the Pakistani Army in the Kargil war.
The Kargil war took shape due to the illegal occupying of important posts in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir by the Pakistani troops.
The shepherds of the location helped Indian Army to confirm the occupied location and win them back.
This operation was named Operation Vijay, thus the name.
This is said to have been acted upon instructions of Pakistani army chief General Parvez Musharraf only and not the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
Nawaz Sharif asked for help from the US which denied it.
On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army confirmed that all of the Pakistani Army have receded from the LOC. But this was after a loss of 527 deaths.
