A magnesium ribbon burns with a dazzling flame in air and changes into a white substance, magnesium oxide. Is magnesium be oxidized or reduced in this reaction? Justify.

Answer:  in the given reaction magnesium is oxidized .

Explanation: the reaction is :

2Mg + O2 ====> 2 MgO

it is clear from the reaction is oxygen added in Mg and form MgO and we know that the addition of oxygen in the reaction is called oxidation reaction .

So, the magnesium is oxidized  and form MgO.
