A magnesium ribbon is burnt in oxygen to give a white coloured compound 'X' with the emission of light. When 'X' is dissolved in water it forms a compound 'Y'. Write balanced chemical equation for the formation of 'X' and 'Y'.

Magnesium reacts with Oxygen and forms 'X'.

equation -

2Mg + O2 ==> 2MgO

So, the compou d 'X' is magnesim oxide.

Now this magnesium oxide reacts with water and forms 'Y'.

equation -

2MgO + 2H2O ==> 2Mg(OH)2.

If you have any doubt, feep free to ask in the comment section.

Thank you.
