Given : A man can row 8km in one hour in still water.

Speed of the water current is 2 km/hr and it takes 3 hours for him to a new place and return,

To find :  the distance from the starting point to the new place.

Solution:

A man can row 8km in one hour in still water.

Speed in still water  = 8 km/hr

Speed of stream = 2 km/hr

Upstream speed = 8 - 2 = 6 km/hr

Down stream speed = 8 + 2 = 10 km/hr

Distance of one side = d km

Total Time taken = d/6 + d/10

= ( 5 + 3)d/30

= 8d/30

8d/30  = 3

=> d = 90/8

=> d = 11.25 km

the distance from the starting point to the new place. = 11.25 km
