total chocolates man had =x

part of chocolate given to his friend =x/3

remain chocolates =x-x/3

=3x-x/3

=2x/3.

again he gave 4 to another frnd

remain chocolates =2x/3-4

=2x-12/4

=x-6/2

finally he left with 8

so x-6/2=8

x-6=16

x=16+6

=22

therefore he had 22 chocolates in start
