Question

A man goes 15m due east and then 20m due north, find his distance from the starting point *

solution.

In this question we have to find the distance from the final position to the starting point (origin).

We will use Pythagoras Theron to solve this question.

First, the man goes 15m east (OA) then turns North and travel 20m (AB).

So, it can be written as -:

 \sf{ \to \:  OB²= OA²+AB²} \\  \\  \sf  { \to \: OB²= {15}^{2}  +  {20}^{2} } \\  \\  \sf{ \to \:OB²=225 + 400 } \\  \\  \sf{ \to \: OB²=625} \\  \\  \sf{ \to \:  \color{red}OB=25 \: metre}

so the distance from the starting point (OB) is 25 metre.

✏️ Distance can be defined as the actual ground covered despite its starting or ending points.

✏️ Displacement is the shortest distance covered by an object keeping in mind the direction of the movement
