                      North = 30km

                     I

                     I

                     I------------  East = 40

distance from his initial position = sq.root of 40^2 + 30^2

                                                     = sq.root of   1600 + 900

                                                    =  sq.root of  2500

                                                    =  sq.root of 25 x 100

                                                    = 5 x 10

                                                    =50 km.
