a man goes 5m in east and then 12m in north direction . find the distance from the starting point.

5m and 12m makes a way like right angled tringle...
so that we can find out the third side = hypotenuse of this right angled triangle.
By Pythagoras Theorem...
h^2 = o^2 + a^2
h^2 = 5^2 + 12^2
h^2 = 25+144
h^2 = 169
h = 13m

EAST(E)=5M NORTH(N)=12M
DISTANCE FROM STARTING POINT (E) TO NORTH(N) CAN BE FOUND BY USING PYTHAGORAS THEOREM
sqTHIRD SIDE= sq SUM OF TWO SIDE
sqEN=sqEO +sqON
=sq5+sq12
=25+144
=169
EN=sq roots 169
=13m
