Let the total distance be D

Find the time needed for the first part of the journey:

Time = Distance ÷ Speed

TIme = 2/3 D ÷ 4 = 1/6 D

Find the time needed for the second part of the journey:

TIme = 1/3 D ÷ 5 = 1/15 D

Solve D:

Total time taken is 42 mins

42 mins = 42/60 = 7/10 hour

1/6 D + 1/15 D = 7/10

7/30 D = 7/10

D = 7/10 ÷ 7/30

D = 3 km

Answer: The total distance is 3 km
