Given:

A man has number of ducks costing $10 each and three times as many chicken costing $6 each.

If total cost of ducks and chickens is $420.

To find:

Find number of ducks and chickens man has

Solution:

Let "x" represent the number of ducks.

Then "3x" is the number of chickens.

Given, ducks cost $10 each and chicken cost $6 each

x × 10 = 10x      and 3x × 6 = 18x

10x is the value of the ducks and  18x is the value of the chickens.

10x + 18x = 420

28x = 420

x = 420/28

x = 15

3x = 3 × 15 = 45

Therefore, the number of ducks is 15 and the number of chickens is 45.
