Given :  A man invests half of the amount he has in 4% stock  at 90

and the other half in 8% stock at 110.

If he had invested the total amount in the 8% stock at 110 he would have made 3500 more.

To Find : How much did he invest?

Solution:

Let say total investment  = 200

Investment in each = 100 A

4% stock  at 90  =   ( 100 / 90 ) 4A  = 40A/9

8% stock at 110.   = (100/110) * 8A  =  80A/11

Total = 40A/9  + 80A/11

= ( 440A  + 720A)/99

= ( 1160A)/99

total amount in the 8% stock at 110  = (100/110) * 16A  = 160A/11

160A/11 = ( 1160A)/99  +  3500

=> 16A/11 = ( 116A)/99  +  350

=> 144A = 116A  +  350*99

=> 28A  = 350 * 99

=> A = 1,237.5

=> 200A = 247500

investment made = 247500
