and the age of his son be y years ;

According to the question

x = y+24 -----–-(1)

(x-12) = 5×(y-12)
x-12 = 5y-60
x = 5y-48 ------(2)

On comparing equation (1) & (2), we get ;

y+24 = 5y-48
5y-y = 24+48
4y = 72
y = 18

x = y+24
x = 18+24
x = 42

Hence the present age of the man is 42 years and that of his son is 18 years
