Let us assume the no. of years when the father's age be six times that of son as 'x'.

Therefore,

42+ x = 6 (12+x)

=> 42 + x = 72+ 6x

=> 5x = - 30

=> x = -30/5

=> x = -6

Therefore , 6 years ago the father's age was as six times as that of son.

Proof :

42-6 = 36 = father's age six years ago

12-6 = 6 = son's age six years ago
