Q. A man moves 4meter towards east and 3meter toward north calculate the
(a) distance
(b) displacement
covered by the man.

Solution :

(a) The distance travelled from O to Y
= OX + XY
= 4m + 3m
= 7m

(b) The displacement of the man is OY, which can be calculated by Pythagoras theorem,

OY  =  \sqrt{ {(OX)}^{2}  +  {( XY)}^{2} }  \\  \\ OY =  \sqrt{ {(4)}^{2} +  {(3)}^{2}  }  \\  \\  OY =   \sqrt{16 + 9}  \\  \\ OY =  \sqrt{25}  \\  \\ OY = 5m

Hence,
distance = 7m
displacement = 5m
