A man of mass m1 = 70 kg is skating at v1 = 8 m/s behind his wife of mass m2 = 5.0 kg, who is skating at v2 = 4.0 m/s. instead of passing her, he inadvertently collides with her. he grabs her around the waist, and they maintain their balance.

Simply use here law of conservation of momentum to find the final speed of collided body

total mass of collided body=50+70=120

let the final velocity of collided body be v

then ,intital momentum=final momentum

70×8+50×4=120×v

560+200=120v

v=760/120

v=63.3m/s

hope it helps you
