Solution :

Let the number of eggs he purchased be x.

Given, cost price of 3 eggs = Rs 5

Cost price of x eggs = Rs \frac{5}{3} x

Selling price of 5 eggs = 12

Selling price of x eggs = \frac{12}{5} x

∴ Gain = Selling price - Cost price

           = \frac{12}{5} x - \frac{5}{3} x

           = Rs. \frac{11}{15} x

Now, \frac{11}{15} x = 143

⇒ x = 143 ÷ \frac{11}{15}

⇒ x = 143 × \frac{15}{11} = \frac{143 \times 15}{11} = 195

Hence, the man purchased 195 eggs.
