A man sold one watch and one pen for Re. 492 and 168 respectively graining 10% of the total cost price of two articles. Had he sold the watch for Rs. 435/- and the pen at its cost price he would have lost 5% on the total cost price. Find the cost price of the watch.

Answer:

given,

sp of watch = 492

sp of pen = 168

gain= 10% of total cp

to find:

if sp of watch= 435

sp of pen = cp of pen

loss of 5% of total cp

then cp of watch= ?

Explanation :

let the cp of watch be x

let the cp of pen be y

total cp = x+y

total sp = 492+168= 660

total profit = 660-x

profit % = 10%

10 =  \frac{660 -( x + y)}{x + y}  \times 100 \\(10x+ 10y) \div 100 = (660 - x - y) \\  \frac{x + y}{10}  = 660 - x - y

2x+2y = 6600

x+y = 3300. -----------(1)

now,

sp of watch = 435

sp of pen = y

total sp = 435+y

total cp = x + y

loss% = 5%

5 = \frac{(x + y)  - (435 + y)}{x + y} \times 100 \\  \frac{x + y}{20}  = x - 435

x+y= 20x-8700

8700 = 19x-y. -----------(2)

equating equations (1) and (2), we get the value of x

cp of watch = x = rs 600
