Given : A man stands on the ground at a point A which is on the same horizontal plane as B, the foot of the vertical pole BC. The height of the pole is 10m. The mans eye is 2m above the ground. he observes the angle of elevation of C, the top of the pole as x degree, where tan x degree= 2/5

To find : the distance AB in metres

Solution:

Man  eye is 2m above the ground.  

Pole height = 10 m

hence height of  top of the pole above man eye = 10 - 2 = 8 m

Tan ( angle of elevation )  =  height of  top of the pole above man eye / horizontal distance

=> Tan (x)  = 8 / AB

=> 2/5 = 8/AB

=> AB = 20

the distance AB in metres  = 20
