let the length of the journey be x
(2/5)x+(1/3)x+(1/4)x+3=x
x(2/5+1/3+1/4-1)+3=0
x(24+20+15-60)/60+3=0
x(-1/60)=-3
x=3*60=120 km

Answer:

Let the whole distance he travelled be x km

Distance covered by train=1/5x

Distance covered by bus =1/3x

Distance covered by car=1/4x

distance covered on foot =3 km

1/3x+1/5x+1/4x+3=x

20+12+15/60x+3=x

x-42/60x =3

60x-42x/60=3

18/60x=3

x=3×60/18

x=180/18

x=10

therefore, length of his total journey =10 km
