A man travels 100 km at 20 km/hr, 60 km at 30 km/ hr and 80 km at 10 km/ hr. What is the average speed for the three trips?

Answer:

Average Speed = Total Distance/ Total Time

Total Distance = 100 + 60 + 30 + 80 = 270 km

Total Time = Distance/Speed = 100/20 = 5

60/10 = 6, 30/10 = 3 and 80/10 = 8

Total Time = 5 + 6 + 3 + 8 = 22 hours

Average Speed = 270/22 = 12.272727..... or 12.3 km/h ( approx. )
