GIVEN :-

  • A man walks 10 m east and 5 meter west.

TO FIND :-

  • The Displacement = ?

SOLUTION :-

Refer to the attachment for better understanding.

Displacement = OA - AB

➣ 10 m - 5 m

5 m east

Hence the displacement is 5 m east.

If we want to find the distance,

Distance = OA + AB

➣ 10 m + 5 m

15 m

Hence the Distance is 15 m.

EXTRA INFORMATION :-

Distance :- The Total distance covered by an object from initial to final point is called distance.

➵ Distance is a scalar quantity

Displacement :- The shortest distance between initial and final point.

➵ Displacement is a vector quantity

Displacement = final point-initial point

10 m-5 m

5 m \:  east

Hence the displacement is 5 m east.
