A man wants to cut three pieces from single piece of board of length 47m. The second piece is to be 3m longer than the shortest one and the third piece is to be twice as long as the shortest piece. What are the possible lengths of the shortest board if the third piece is to be at least 5m longer than the second?

Let the length of the shorter piece =x m
Let the length of the second piece=(x+3)m
Let the length of the third piece    = 2x m
Total length of the board               =47m
x m+(x+3)m+ 2xm                         =47m
4x+3m                                           =47 m
4x                                                  =47m-3m
x                                                    =44m/4
x                                                    =11m
So, the length of the three pieces are
1st piece = xm=11m
2nd piece=(x+3)m=11+3m=14m
3rd piece=2x m =2*11m=22m
Ans.=The lengths of the three pieces of wooden block are 11m, 14m and 22m.
