Given :  A man who owned 25% of the equity capital of a certain company sold 1/3 of his holding last year and 5/12 of the remaining this year.

To Find : What part of business does he own now?

Solution:

Assume that   Total  Business equity capital  =     B

A man owned 25% of the equity capital = (25/100)B  = B/4

sold 1/3 of his holding  = (1/3)B/4 = B/12

Remaining Holding = B/4 - B/12

= (3B - B)/12

= 2B/12

= B/6

Sold 5/12 of the remaining  = (5/12)(B/6) = 5B/72

Remaining =  B/6 - 5B/72

= ( 12B - 5B)/72

= 7B/72

= (7/72) B

7/72  part of business  he own now
