Hence 12x − y = 6 → (1)

Also when Rs 9 is given to each person he is left with Rs 9

Hence y − 9x = 9  → (2)

3x = 15

∴ x = 5

Number of persons is 5

Put x = 5 in (1), we get 12(5) − y = 6

⇒ y = 60 − 6 = 54
