The mass of the object [m] = 1000 kg.

The initial velocity of the object [ u] = 10 m/s

The final velocity of the object  [v] = 0

The stopping distance is given as [s] = 100 m.

Let a is the retardation of the object.

From equation of kinematics we know that-

                                        v^2-u^2\ =\ 2as

                                        a\ =\ \frac{v^2-u^2}{2s}

                                              =\ \frac{0^2-[10]^2}{2*100}\ m/s^2

                                              =\ -0.5\ m/s^2

Now, we have to calculate the retarding force.

From Newton's second law we know that-

                                 F = ma       [F stands for force]

                                    = 1000  × [-0.5] N

                                    = -500 N

The negative sign is due to the fact that force is opposite to the displacement.
