(a) Mention any two reasons to explain the ability of carbon to form a large number of compounds. (b) Differentiate between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons giving one example of each. (c) Name any other element which like carbon can form compounds which have chains upto seven or eight atoms. How do these compounds differ from carbon compounds ?

a) Carbon has some really unique properties which help to form large number of compounds.....
1) Catenation :- It is the ability of carbon to form long chains, branched chains or rings.

2) Smaller nucleus helps it to attract more number of electrons.

3)Tetra valency

b)Saturated hydrocarbon :-
1)In this type, the carbon atoms are connected by a single covalent bond.
2)These single bonded compounds are called as Alkene
3)They don't undergo hydrogenation.

Unsaturated hydrocarbon :-
1) In this type, the carbon atoms are connected by multiple bonds like double bonds (=) or triple bond (≡).
2)These double bounded compounds are called Alkene and triple bounded compounds are called Alkynes .
3)They can be hydrogenated by passing hydrogen gas as they have less hydrogen than saturated hydrocarbons.

As you already got answers for (a) and (b).
(c). Silicon (Si) is the other element which acts as carbon because Si can also form chains upto 7 or 8 atoms.
This element is a bit different from carbon because this element (Si) cannot form long chains like carbon can as the attraction between the atoms decrease so it breaks when chain is more that 8 atoms.
