|| GIVEN ||

  • Metal Oxide which is black in colour.
  • When X is heated with Hydrogen , It produces Reddish brown gas , Which is called Y.

|| TO FIND ||

  • The metals X and Y.
  • Chemical reation between X and Y.
  • Which is been oxidised or reduced.

|| SOLUTION ||

We can guess by the product given which happens in our everyday life. Iron gets rusts when mixed with air since water ( H20 ) makes it get rusted and produces Reddish brown colour. But Iron ( Fe ) Wont react with Hydrogen gas. So the Metal which is black in colour is Copper ( Cu ).

  • X = CuO ( Cuprous Oxide )

When this cuprous Oxide gets heated up with hydrogen gas , It produces Reddish brown gas.

CuO (s) + H2 (g) → Cu (s) + H2O(l)

So here the Copper and Water is the Y

  • Y = Cu (s) + H2O(l)

So , Hydrogen ( H2 ) is getting oxidised and CuO is getting reduced.

→ Therefore , CuO is Oxidising agent and H2 is a reducing agent.

Answer:

Required Answer :-

So,

Element X is black and when element X is heated with hydrogen then metal Y is formed which is reddish brown in colour.

Here

Element X = Copper oxide

When copper oxide is heated with hydrogen then it becomes copper

Now

\bf CuO + H_2 \longrightarrow Cu + H_2O

So,

Oxidise substance = CuO

Reducing agent = H2
