The final temperature of the mixture is 30°C.

Given,

A metal piece of mass 250 grams at 80°C is dropped into 120 grams of water at 20°C.

The specific heat capacity of the metal is 0.09 cal.

To Find,

The final temperature.

Solution,

Let us assume that the final temperature is x.

Now, the energy amount going out of the warm water is equal to the energy amount going into the cool water

So,

q lost = q gain

(250) (80 − x)(0.09) = (120) (x − 20.0) (1)

80-x = 120/22.5(x-20)

80-x = 5(x-20)

80-x = 5x-100

180 = 6x

x = 30°C

Hence, the final temperature of the mixture is 30°C.
