When we put a metal rod in water it sinks immediately because metal is denser than water. But the ship made up of same metal floats for the following reasons: 1.ship is not a solid block of iron and steel. 2.A ship is a hollow object made up of iron and steel which contains lot of air in it.3. Due to presence of a lot of air in it, the average density of ship becomes less than the density of water. 4. Since the average density of ship is less than water, It floats on water. 5.when ship is placed in water it sinks to a certain level such that the weight of water displaced by it's submerged portion is equal to weight of the ship. 6.Since the ship fulfils the condition of flotation, It floats on water.
