Electrometallurgy is the process of reduction of metals from metallic compounds to obtain the pure form of metal using electrolysis. Aluminium,lithium, sodium, potassium,magnesium, calcium, and in some cases copper, are produced in this way.

Through electrolysis we can obtain metals like Aluminium, Potassium, Sodium etc from their oxides.

These metals cannot be reduced because they have higher affinity for oxygen than for materials like carbon. Therefore, these are obtained by electrolysis of their molten chlorides.

Eg

At cathode

Na+ + e- -----> Na

At anode

2Cl- -------->Cl2 + 2e-
