A mineral consists of an equimolar
| mixture of carbonate of two bivalent
metals. one metal is present to the extent
of 12.5% by weight. 2.8gm of minerals
on heating lost 1.32gm of co2 what is
the %. by weight of the other metal?

Answer:

Let the two metal carbonates be MCO3 and M′CO3. On heating the metal carbonates, the reactions that occur are:

MCO3→MO+CO2↑

M′CO3→M′O+CO2↑

Equivalents of CO2= Equivalents of carbonates of metals

1 mol of CO2=1 mol of CO2−3

44 g of CO2=60 g of CO2−3

1.10 g of CO2=6044×1.10=1.5 g of CO2−3

Total mass of carbonate is 3 grams. Hence,

% of CO2−3=1.5×1003=50%

% of one metal =15%

therefore, % of another metal =100−50−15=35%.
