QuestioN :

A mixture contains alcohol and water in the ratio 3:2. If 4 litres of water is added to the mixture, the ratio becomes 3 : 4. Find the quantity of water in the given mixture.

GiveN :

  • A mixture contains alcohol and water in the  ratio 3:2.
  • 4 litres of water is added to the  mixture, the ratio becomes 3 : 4.

To FiNd :

  • The quantity of water in the given mixture.

ANswer :

∴Quantity of water in the given mixture = 4 liters.

SolutioN :

Let the quantity of alcohol be 3m and quantity of water be 2m

Now when 4 liters of water is added ratio becomes 3 : 4

So atq,

⇒ 3m : (2m + 4) = 3 : 4

⇒ 3m/(2m + 4) = 3/4

⇒ 12m = 3(2m + 4)

⇒ 12m = 6m + 12

⇒ 12m - 6m = 12

⇒ 6m = 12

⇒ m = 12/6

⇒ m = 2

Now quantity :

⇒ Quantity of alcohol = 3m = 3(2) = 6 liters.

⇒ Quantity of water = 2m = 2(2) = 4 liters.

Therefore,

∴Quantity of water in the given mixture = 4 liters.
