a mixture do not have Chemical formulae - give reason
Answers
Answer:
A mixture is a …mixture of different substances, right? It is made up of more than one element and / or compound, physically mixed together.
Each component— element or substance— in a mixture has a formula. BUT, a chemical formula can ONLY be written for a single substance. So, for example, the chemical formula for water is H2O, showing two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom chemically bonded together into a single molecule. The formula for salt (sodium chloride) is NaCl, showing that sodium chloride is made of one sodium and one chlorine atom bonded together. But you can NOT say the formula for salt water is H2ONaCl or something like that, because the water and the salt are NOT chemically bound together. It’s just a physical mixture of water and salt.
A little extra info, ignore if confusing:
Sometimes you see things like CuSO4 x 5H2O, indicating a “hydrated crystal” of copper sulfate with five water molecules. This is technically a physical mixture, but it’s a “formula unit”, showing that each copper sulfate molecule holds five water molecules in its crystal structure. This is more specific than a mixture like saltwater, or mud, or whatever, which could have different proportions of each component
