Given:

A mixture of 60 l contains ethanol and water in a ratio of 4:1.

To find:

The amount of water should be added to the mixture to make a ratio of 2:1.

Solution:

The quantity of the mixture is 60l.

The ratio of ethanol to water is 4:1.

Hence the amount of ethanol is 60×4/5=48 litre and the amount of water is 60-48=12 litre.

Now let x litre of water is added.

Now the ratio is 2:1.

So, we can write-

 \frac{48}{12 + x } = \frac{2}{1} \\ 48 = 24 + 2x \\ 2x = 24 \\ x = 12

The value of x is 12.

Hence 12 l of water is added.
