A mixture of He and O2 were used in the air tanks of underwater divers for deep sea dives . For a particular dive 12 dm^3of O2at 1atm. and 46dm^3 of He at 1atm. were both pumped into a 5dm^3 tank. what is the partial pressure of each gas and the total pressure in the tank at 298 K?

Answer:

2.4 , 9.2 atm

Explanation:

final Volume acquired by the gases will be same because same cylinder.

P1V + P2V = P3V3

(1×12) + (1×46) = (P × 5)

P = 58/5 = 11.6 atm

Partial pressure will be proportional to initial volume

O2 = 12/(12+46) × 11.6 = 2.4 atm

He = 46/(12+46) × 11.6 = 9.2 atm
