A mixture of oxalic acid ad formic acid is heated with concentrated H2SO4 and the gas evolved is collected. On treatment with KOH the solution this volume of the solution decreased by 1/6th. Calculate the molar ratio of the two acids in the original mixture.

Total no. of moles of CO  and CO2
= a + b + b
= a + 2b
Total no. of moles of CO2 = b
Moles fraction of CO2 absorbed in KOH
= b/a+ 2b

According to given condition
= b/a+ 2b = 1/6

a = 4b

Ratio of molar ratio of the two acids in the original mixture
= HCOOH / H2C2O4
= 4 /1
