Because half of the chromosomes come in the child's body so that we have 46 chromosomes

Chromosomes are found in the forms of pairs in both parents i.e it means that there are 23 pairs of chromosomes in both parents. During meiosis, the chromosome number is decreased to one half so that all the daughter cells or gametes formed recieve only half of the total number of chromosomes that is 23 chromosomes in one gamete. When two gametes come together to fertilize the original number (46) is restored.
