The movement of an object in any medium (except the vacuum) produces automatically a force in exactly the opposite direction: this is the force of friction (of the air, the water, the ground). This force slows down the moving object and tends to ultimately stop it.

Answer:

Friction

Explanation:

a body will remain in state of rest or motion until an external force is applied ... for example a moving body will only come in rest of some force is applied ....

in case of a vacuum once the body gains motion it won't stop but on Earth or somewhere with atmosphere there are many variables for ex - wind friction, water friction , friction on land surface which ultimately stops the motion of the body .... this is why when we kick a soccer ball it comes to rest after a while becoz of the force of friction acting on it
