Question :

A multistory building has 38 floors above the ground level each of height 7m. It also has 4 floors in the basement each of height 6m. A lift in building moves at a rate of 2m/sec. If a man starts from 170m above the ground, how long will it take him to reach at 3 floor of basement?

To find :

Time taken by him to reach at 3 floor of basement?

Solution :

Each floor has a height of 6m and basement of 4 floors.

If a man starts from 170m above the ground and 3rd floor of basement

So,

Distance travelled above the ground → 170m

Distance below basement → 3 × 6 = 18m

Total distance covered = 170m + 18m → 188m

Rate of moving of lift = 2m/sec

It means that it will travel 2m in 1 sec

So for 1m it will take = 1/2 sec

So time taken to reach 188m = 188 × 1/2 → 94 seconds

∴ Time taken by the man to reach the 3rd floor of the basement is 94 seconds

So by converting into mins we get

60 sec = 1min

94 sec = 1 minute 34 seconds

So the time taken is 1 min 34 sec

So option A is correct
