(a) Isolation of alkali metals
- Alkali metals can be extracted by a process called electrolysis.
- In this process, instead of using the salts, the chlorides and oxides of the metals of interest are used.
- When chlorides or oxides of these metals are treated with electric current for little period, metal is extracted.
(b) Flame color of sodium and potassium
- As the wavelength of sodium metal is 589.2nm, it burns with a yellow flame.
- As the wavelength of potassium is 766.5nm, it burns with a violet flame.
