NETWORK POLYMERS

(C) BAKELITE is a network polymer.

CHARACTERISTICS OF BAKELITE AS NETWORK POLYMER :

* Bakelite is a polymer with a space-network structure. Space-network polymers are heavily and irregularly cross-linked throughout the structure, unlike linear and branching polymers, which are made up of long molecules that make them more or less crystalline.

* Because of the extensive cross-linking, a sample of the substance is effectively one massive molecule.

* Heat softens and melts linear and branching polymers, but it does not soften or melt space-network polymers since this would involve the breakdown of covalent bonds.

* In fact, heating these polymers frequently causes further cross-linking, making them tougher. Space-network polymers, such as bakelite, are known as thermoset plastics because of this.
