A neutral organic compound X of molecular formula C2H6O on oxidation with acidified potassium dichromate gives an acidic compound Y. Compound X reacts with Y on warming in the presence of cone. H2S04 to give a sweet smelling substance Z. What are X, Y and Z ?

Answer:

X is a neutral organic compound with the formula of C2H6O. So X is ethanol. Ethanol is an alcohol with structural formula being CH3CH2OH. OH is the alcohol group.

On oxidation of ethanol with potassium dichromate, we get Y. So Y is ethanoic acid which is a carboxylic acid. Alcohol when oxidised gives aldehyde and atlast gives acid.

Z is a sweet smelling substance produced by combining X and Y in presence of concentrated H2SO4. So, Z is ethyl ethanoate ester.
